All mesh is made outside the U.S. by about 7 different companies.  There are no common standards among these companies.  For each mesh count, one company might make as many as 3 different versions of that mesh count.  The difference in versions is thread diameter.  A larger thread diameter takes more more space in the one inch of a mesh count like 305.  Therefore, the hole through which the ink passes will be smaller, and less ink is released to the garment.  Similarly, a smaller diameter thread in the same space (1" divided by 305 threads) would release more ink.  The amount of ink released has a huge impact on opacity, and more importantly, color creation in four color process and simulated process printing.  To be  a quality screen printer, it is imperative that you know which diameter you are using, and that you consistently use the same mesh to get consistent quality in your prints.  As soon as you change vendors or manufacturers, you are at risk.

110 mesh is 110 threads by 110 threads per square inch, or a total of 12,100 holes per square inch for the ink to pass through the mesh.  305 mesh is 305 x 305 or 93,025 holes.  So the size of the holes in one square inch of 305 mesh are a lot smaller than in 110 mesh, and therefore release a lot less ink.  That affects opacity and your ability to control the creation of colors.  305 mesh has 7.68 times as many holes as 110 mesh.  When you feel the mesh, you can feel the difference between the coarse 110 mesh and finer 305 mesh.

Mesh can be LE (low elongation) or not.  LE cost slightly more, but is well worth the extra money.  We only sell LE mesh.  Higher mesh tensions can be developed, and faster, with LE mesh, and the mesh will hold the tension longer.   That saves labor and overhead that are far more costly than the pennies additional cost.  Shark vendors either don't know what they are selling, or sell standard mesh to have a lower price.  The sharks also buy up odd lots, over stocks and other odd sources of mesh at discounted prices to sell at low prices.

The diameter of the thread is critical to mesh tension.  110 mesh, for example, should be 80 microns.  305 mesh can be 35 or 40 microns, or about half the diameter of the 110 mesh.  The physical mass of 80 microns is 4 times 40 microns.  A=2PiRsquared.  As a result, 110 mesh can be stretched to 30 N/cm on the first tensioning.  A 40 micron thread should be stretched to 16 N/cm.  If you try to exceed this limit, you will most likely break the mesh.  Inserting the mesh with the threads absolutely parallel to the sides of the frame is critical to developing high tension without breaking the mesh.

Dyed mesh costs more than white mesh, because of the cost of the dye and process to dye the mesh.  Dyed mesh absorbs light from the exposure unit, and therefore takes a little longer to expose images.  However, by absorbing light rather than refracting light with white mesh there is less under-cutting of the image in the positive and more precise image reproduction.  Dyed mesh should be used with mesh counts 180 and higher when high resolution is required.  Mesh counts of 180 and lower typically are not used for high resolution images, and therefore the extra money for dyed mesh is a waste of money.  180 white mesh is recommended for printing solvent based inks, like signs, where the mesh is discarded after the job rather than cleaned with nasty chemicals.  180 dyed mesh is used for plastisol inks and printing details.

Your supplier of a tension meter should provide you with a tension chart for standard mesh counts.  We provide that chart to our customers who buy a meter from us.
